TACHE Comunidad Mourns the Loss of Colega Dr. Michael A. Olivas

Querida TACHE Familia,

It is with great sadness that we bring to you the news of the passing of our beloved colega; Dr. Michael A. Olivas. The Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education (TACHE) joins the larger community of higher education, U.S. and international legal educators, scholars, and practitioners in mourning his loss.

Dr. Olivas was a fierce advocate and an acclaimed higher education and immigration law scholar who was prominent in legal education and advocacy for Latinx students. Dr. Olivas, who retired as the William B. Bates distinguished chair of law and director of the Institute for Higher Education Law and Governance at the University of Houston Law Center, will be remembered for his work in advancing civil education and immigration rights.

Dr. Olivas touched the lives of many both near and far. He was a fierce advocate for Latinx students, worked for Dreamers and for many other immigrants, and was a strong advocate for affirmative action. He leaves behind a prolific body of work, and a legacy, that has made an immeasurable contribution to our comunidad. His work will allow TACHE to continue to progress and build upon our mission and goals. For that, TACHE will be forever grateful for the tireless work that Dr. Olivas provided to nuestra gente!

We know that many of our TACHE familia looked up to his advocacy and leadership. With the passing of Dr. Olivas, our TACHE comunidad has lost a true hero. Dr. Olivas was a dear friend, mentor, supporter, champion, and colega to many. His countless acts of service have truly impacted many within our comunidad of scholars. Dr. Olivas’ work will always serve as a reminder of his legacy and his determination for our Latinx comunidad.

Our thoughts and oraciones are with the rest of Dr. Olivas’ family and friends. His influence over the lives whom he touched will always be remembered and cherished dearly.

¡Otros han ido y venido, pero el Dr. Olivas y su legado continuarán para siempre! Amigo, que descanses en paz.

Con muchísimo cariño,

Florencio U. Aranda, III, M.A., M.S., M.L.S., Ph.D.
