Del Mar College has had an abiding interest in the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education. Currently, there are over 100 members in the local chapter of TACHE. Most members are employees at Del Mar College, including members of the Board of Regents.

Del Mar College is located in the heart of Corpus Christi – a city situated on the Gulf of Mexico and located just hours south of San Antonio and Houston.

History

After a period of inactivity, the Del Mar College chapter experienced an interest among College employees to join this organization. TACHE Del Mar supports fellowship and scholarship awards and other educational activities. The principal purpose of the organization is to provide a few scholarships each year to deserving students, and members continue to augment the number and the amounts of these scholarships.

In 1995-1996, TACHE Del Mar awarded its first scholarship of $250 per semester to one student, a total amount of $500 per year. Since that time, the organization has increased the number of students to four and the total amount per year to $4,800, an 860% increase!

DMC employees have served in the TACHE State Board as well. Dr. Elias Villarreal, Dean of Student Support Services, first served as south regional representative in 1988-1989 and then as treasurer starting in 1989 through 2003. Dr. Villarreal became president elect in 2003 and then TACHE State President in 2004.

In addition, Maria Salinas, Freshman Seminar Instructor, and Rudy Duarte, Assistant to the President of Instruction, have both served as Regional Representatives covering the TACHE State South Region. However, Dr. Villarreal is also a Charter member of TACHE, as he represented Texas Southmost College at the 1974 organizational meeting in Austin.

Several state conferences have taken place in Corpus Christi. The local TACHE chapter at Del Mar College, along with representatives of Texas A&M University—Corpus Christi and Texas A&M University—Kingsville, and Coastal Bend College, has served as host to the state conference. The most current one was in January 2004.
