Creer y Crecer: Inspiring and Building a Stronger Nation through Higher Education.

Belinda Saldana Harmon

Welcome to the 42nd Annual TACHE Conference!

It is my honor to invite and welcome you to the 42nd annual conference of the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education (TACHE) to be held in Austin, Texas, February 26-March 1, 2017. The conference theme this year is “Creer y Crecer: Inspiring and Building a Stronger Nation through Higher Education.”

It was the late Dr. Hector P. Garcia—founder of the American G.I. Forum—who said “Education is our Freedom and Freedom should be Everybody’s Business.” TACHE has made higher education our business. Via advocacy, scholarships, sharing expertise and best practices, we continue to advocate for underrepresented students, faculty and staff.

The TACHE conference provides a critical opportunity to showcase great work that enhances educational and employment opportunities for Latinos in higher education. We seek to inspire and build upon that work as we address historical disparities.

Now more than ever, we must work to ensure that underrepresented populations have access to higher education; further, that underrepresented faculty and staff have access and pathways to tenure and leadership positions at colleges and universities. As great advocates like Dr. Garcia would likely agree, the front of the classroom impacts the back of the classroom, just as the top leadership impacts critical decisions about whom is served and how.

Save the date and make plans to:

  • Register for the conference
  • Become a TACHE member
  • Invite your institution to become a TACHE member institution
  • Ask your institution to sponsor the TACHE conference
  • Prepare to submit your scholarly work and proposals
  • Nominate your colleagues for TACHE awards: both faculty and staff
  • Bring your students to the conference
  • Inform students about the TACHE fellowship application

Join us in Austin as we continue to honor those that came before us by advocating for those that have yet to come. An educated Texas is a stronger Texas, and a stronger Texas is critical to the business of a stronger nation.

I look forward to meeting you in Austin!

Belinda Saldaña Harmon
